Variety the Children's Charity of St. Louis - “I Can!”
An athletic young girl goes to bed on Christmas night the vision of health, and wakes up the next morning paralyzed from the waist down. How do you explain to that child that she can’t excel in her favorite sports activities because you don’t have the means to pay for the necessary special equipment?
A little boy who has battled through seizures and surgeries throughout his young life dreams of riding a bike with his neighborhood friends. How do you tell that child he can’t join his buddies for a ride because an adaptive bike is too expensive?
A young child awakes from a three-week coma with a desire to see what lies beyond the walls of her own home or a hospital. How do you express to her that she can’t experience the simple joy of a car ride because you can’t afford the special equipment to transport her?
When these children have nowhere else to turn, Variety provides them with vital medical equipment, and educational, therapeutic and recreational programs. These services enable them to become as mobile and independent as possible, fostering an “I CAN!” attitude and ensuring that these special children do not fall through the cracks in our society. Variety engages the community to make all of this possible, through donations, in-kind gifts and volunteer work.
To fully enable these children to live out this self-fulfilling statement, we must expand the term to "We Can!" With your generous donations, "We Can!" provide essential medical equipment, inclusive internal programs and outreach programs that offer hope, independence and a sense a “normalcy” to the daily lives of these wonderful children and their families.
We can provide mobility through special equipment such as wheelchairs, prostheses, standers, braces, strollers, lifts and ramps.
- We can provide communication through cutting-edge technology such as augmentative speech devices and digital programmable hearing aids.
- We can provide therapy through therapeutic treadmills, swings, and bikes.
- We can provide safety through bath lifts, hospital beds, shower chairs, and car seats.
- We can provide inclusive, dynamic programs such as Adventure Camp and the Children’s Chorus.
