Sounds like fun, right? We'd all like our summers to be filled with these activities! Thanks to generous donors, about 100 kids with physical and mental disabilities will experience all of those adventures and more this summer at Variety Adventure Camp.
This year's camp sessions are: June 6-11, June 20-24 and July 11-15. It will take place primarily at The Heights in Richmond Heights, but special days will be held at St. Peter's Rec Plex, The Saint Louis Zoo, Maryland Heights Community Center and Aqua Port, and Catch 22 Miracle Field. Specially trained counselors and medical professionals are on-site each day, as Variety places great emphasis on safety, proper equipment fit and expert instruction. All activities are adapted to each camper's ability level. Most campers are paired one-on-one with a counselor or volunteer. They form friendships with counselors and fellow campers that last a lifetime, and learn that they're able to say "I CAN" to lots of fun activities!
Variety Adventure Camp allows kids with disabilities to experience activities they often only hear about from their typically developing peers. No one sits on the sidelines at camp. It's a place where the impossible becomes possible!
A few spots for campers still remain for the second and third weeks, June 20-24 and July 11-15, with waiting lists in process for the first week. We still need a few counselors and volunteers, particularly for the third week. For more information, click here, or call Program Director Barb Kramer at (314) 453-0453, ext. 115.
