Stories from Adventure Camp Week One

Whew...we don't know about you, but we are worn out! Week One of Adventure Camp was so much fun!  Highlights included two days of martial arts, adapted ice skating at the St. Peters Rec Plex, adapted tennis under the expert direction of our friends at UMSL, a visit to the Zoo on Thursday and cooking at L'Ecole Culinaire.  We've been posting a ton of photos on Facebook all week...have you seen them?

Each camper also receives a copy of "Adventures Weekly," recapping the week's activities at camp.  Click here to download a digital version.

And if you can't get enough, read on for additional thoughts from our group leaders...

Group One (Meghan)

Group 1 had a fun-filled first week at Variety Adventure Camp. The theme for this week was “Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!” To incorporate this animal theme into camp, we made animal faces in art class out of felt, stickers and googley eyes. We sang animal songs and danced around like our favorite animal in music class. And we were even able to enjoy a little time outside in the heat enjoying nature, but cooled off indoors for a little ice-skating. For our special event this week, Variety Adventure Camp plans to visit the St. Louis Zoo to see a wide variety of animals.

We had some familiar faces at camp this week but we also made some new friends. Abby M., Isaac T. and Grace M. loved playing instruments and dancing together in music class. Addison F. and Will H. went wild in the gym during sports time. Andrew G., Dominic L., Kyle T. and Jace. H. enjoyed getting messy in art class. Finley M. and Norah W. cruised around on the ice rink. And the fish of our group, Lucy M., Ryan M., and James M., had a blast playing in the water.

Group Two (Liz)

Group 2 roared like a lion into the first week of Adventure Camp. "Lions, and Tigers and Bears? (Oh my!) Animals in our life!" was the first weeks theme. We learned all about animals this week which would include a fun, exciting trip to the zoo!

Everyone made new friends this first week of camp. Lana H. and Tara R. became great friends in the pool this week as our strong swimmers. Matthew S. and Zachary S. were the pros on the ice rink. Skyler F. and Ainsley B. had plenty of smiles in music class. Emily L. and Davion B. was having fun with all the activities and gave everyone something to smile at.

Group Three (Kathryn)

Group 3 has had a thrilling first week so far at Adventure Camp. This week our theme was “Lions, and Tigers, and Bears! Oh My! Animals in our life! Through this theme our group learned a song about a zebra in music, then in art each camper created their favorite animal and all are excited about the trip to the Zoo on Thursday.

Gracie G. and Joe D. and Jack S. loved taking trips down the slide during swimming time while Anna M. and Maggie S. and Caroline P. enjoyed the lazy river in the pool. Jacob M and Ben and Will C. had a great time in the gym playing with the basketballs, while Olivia, Myles and Trip loved playing the instruments in music. Lindsey S. and Shane M. loved moving around on the scooters, while Ty’Reece W. was the king at knocking down the bowling pins. Group 3 is looking forward to the rest of the week, most importantly the Zoo and the weeks to come at Adventure Camp!

Group Four (John)

Welcome back to Variety Adventure Camp! It’s exciting to see familiar faces and new campers as well. This week’s theme is “Animals in our life; Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!” This theme seems to reflect group 4’s great energy and enthusiasm.

The first few days of camp we have been learning both about each other and from each other. Timmy K., Nathaniel T., and Alexandra G. liked hanging out in the pool. Sky, especially enjoyed going down the waterslide! Our gymnasts, Matt Spellmeyer and Chris S. had fun monkeying around on the playground. Peyton W., Nathan R., Matt Schmidtt, and Louis B. displayed great skill in the gym playing basketball and hitting home runs. Kassian enjoyed cooling off and practicing his moves on the ice rink. Our artists, Jacob Y., Janetta R., and Cody S. created animal puppets from Dixie cups. Emma B. and Ethan H. had an amazing time rocking out at music class. We are all looking forward to our Zoo fieldtrip where it will be, truly, a wild time. Our group motto for this week is; “Group FOUR, hear us ROAR!
